The design concept was to emphasize significance of UNESCO world heritage site of Buddha cliff and kakrak valley caves with the niche of standing Buddha.
Hence a major axis is created considering the location of eastern Buddha niche in the master plan.
Perpendicular to this is the axis which further allows the visitors to explore the northern caves.
This forms the basis of the proposed master plan and allows the buildings within this cultural centre to open up towards the bamiyan valley.
The building signifies use of vernacular architecture in its materials. The built and unbuilt spaces form a symbiotic relationship which can be experienced as carved spaces something which is similar to the traditional architecture of the bamiyan.
Courtyards are proposed in the design to keep in line with the social and cultural context of the place. The axis towards eastern Buddha cliff is mentioned as "passage of the broken arcade" to signify the absence of Buddha statue and retrieve the past glory hence the arches along the "passage of the broken arcade" are half complete is their structural form.
Materials used are local bricks and form finished concrete which makes the design completely sustainable and enhances use to local artisans.
The roof profile is a derivation of the Buddha niche and also allows for natural light in all habitable spaces
